The American Moving and Storage Association – the Pro Mover Program:

The American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA) is one of the places where you can check up a moving company, which is why it is often recommended in our articles. A few years ago AMSA launched a consumer protection and certification program called ProMover. Its purpose is to deal with rogue movers and help people who relocate find reliable, trustworthy and reputable moving companies for their move. What is this program, what does AMSA’s Code of Ethics state and what does AMSA advice you to look for when searching for a mover?

What is the Pro Mover Program?

The Pro Mover program sets a number of goals and quality moving companies can adhere to them. So, when searching for removals you can look for the AMSA ProMover program logo on the website of the moving company and on its marketing and advertising materials – it means that this particular mover participates in the American Moving and Storage Association’s certified mover program. What do movers do to become part of this program which makes them better than most other movers out there?

The ownership of the company is verified with the corresponding state corporation commission.
The members must accept and follow the Code of Ethics of AMSA and comply with FMCSA and the Surface Transportation Board (STB) regulations. For the purpose, the moving company signs an agreement.
The website of the mover who applies for the ProMover program is reviewed – the purpose of this is to establish if there is any improper advertising and that the website has at least a “satisfactory” rating by the Better Business Bureau. In this way organizations work together to provide more quality moving services to everyone relocating.
The moving company is investigated for felony convictions, including its owner(s), officers or majority stockholders.
In other words, AMSA’s Pro Mover program works together with federal and state governments to decrease any unethical practices that may exist in the moving industry. It will help you recognize the quality professionals and discern them among other movers, which in its turn will help you choose a more reliable moving company – a task that is generally not that easy, having in mind how many of them are out there.
What Are its Benefits?

AMSA’s purpose is to ensure that you get the best quality move on a reasonable price. It also provides assistance for consumers when looking for home and company relocation and storage services. Furthermore, AMSA’s website is full of tips from finding a mover, info on the move itself, after the move, a moving blog, etc. You can also find there useful information on your rights and responsibilities. One of the things that AMSA cannot provide is reimburse you for any caused damages, return money you’ve paid or make the mover pay you for the damages. Still, if a moving company has entered the ProMover program but does not go by its rules, it will be removed of it.

What Are AMSA’s Tips on Hiring Movers?

Before hiring a moving company, AMSA advices that you look for the Pro Mover logo at the moving company’s website and promotional materials. After you find it, look for the address and phone number of the mover. If there is just a “contact us” form, then you should be careful. Reliable moving companies openly state when and where the could be found because they play by the rules and have nothing and no one to hide from. Watch out when you get the quote form back – usually prices will be similar and will differ a little bit. If there is a quote, that is significantly lower than the other quotes or feels too good to be true, then it probably is. Sometimes rogue movers give very low estimates to attract customers and when you sign with them you find out that there are additional taxes to pay or that services like packing are not included in the quote and you have to pay extra for them. And being aware of what to expect in terms of costs when relocating is crucial. The mover’s website should also show the federal motor carrier (MC) number of the company. You can use this number to check the mover on AMSA’s website or the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) website to find out more information about it. There are also some states with moving associations so check if your state has one, when relocating short distance, and look for movers that are members of it.

If you want your move to be smooth, look for an AMSA ProMover when searching for a moving company!
What does AMSA’s Code of Ethics state?

AMSA’s Code of Ethics is to be observed by all ProMovers. According to it, moving companies accept to be ethical and honest, and to provide quality and efficient services. Moving companies must offer quality when providing moving and storage services. They should look for room for improvement all the time and should make what is necessary to make those improvements a reality. ProMovers accept to promote the elimination of deceit, fraud, misrepresentation and unethical practices within the moving industry. Of course, these moving companies should also take care of its employees by being concerned with their staff’s health, welfare and safety.
